Karl Marx Biography and History, About Karl Marx

Karl Heinrich Marx (1818-83) was born in Prussia in a Jewish family who later converted to Protestantism. His education included studies of law, history, and philosophy at universities located in Bonn, Berlin, and Jena. Marx earned a doctorate degree in philosophy at age twenty-three. Throughout Marx's career, his wife, Jenny Westphalen, who was also the daughter of a baron employed in a high government office, remained highly supportive and devoted companion. Because of his radicalism, Marx was interestingly exiled from Germany and studied French socialism and English political economy in Paris before finally settling in London. Marx's life was plagued by frequent illness and extreme poverty. Fortunately for him, his career was financially sustained by his close friend and colleague Friedrich Engels (1820-95).
